Coastal Blue, Black, or Winestone? Why I Finally Chose Winestone Shutters for My Home

One of the hardest parts of updating your home exterior isn’t always the installation — it’s deciding which color will actually look best once everything is up. That was exactly the situation I found myself in while replacing my old faded shutters.

For years, my house had reddish shutters that had faded badly from years of sun and weather exposure. They were originally close to a Winestone color, but time had definitely taken its toll. Since it was finally time for an upgrade, I decided to compare three different options from Ply Gem before making my final decision:

  • Coastal Blue
  • Black
  • Winestone

I even held each color up against the house to get a true side-by-side comparison before deciding. Pictures online can only tell you so much — seeing them in natural sunlight against your siding makes a huge difference.

The First Contender: Coastal Blue

I honestly didn’t expect to like Coastal Blue as much as I did. Once I held it up against the house, it immediately gave everything a softer, cleaner, more updated look.

The blue added personality without feeling overwhelming, and it gave the home a fresh coastal-style charm. If you want something unique but still classic, Coastal Blue is a really beautiful option.

For a while, I truly thought this would be the winner.



The Timeless Option: Black

Black shutters are classic for a reason. They instantly add contrast and make windows stand out in a bold, clean way.

When I tested the black shutters, they gave the house a much sharper and more modern appearance. Black works with almost everything and definitely boosts curb appeal.

But after stepping back and looking at the whole picture, the contrast felt just a little stronger than what I personally wanted for my home.



Why I Ultimately Chose Winestone

In the end, I decided to go with Winestone — and I’m really glad I did.

Since my original shutters were already similar in tone, Winestone kept the character of the house intact while still making everything look fresh and updated. It feels warm, traditional, and welcoming without looking outdated.

What I liked most is that Winestone blended naturally with the house instead of overpowering it. The color adds richness and curb appeal while still feeling timeless.

Sometimes the best choice isn’t the boldest one — it’s the one that feels the most “right” when you see it on your home.



Seeing the Colors in Person Helped the Most

One thing I’d definitely recommend if you’re replacing shutters is physically holding different colors against your house before buying.

Lighting changes everything. A color that looks perfect online can look completely different in direct sunlight or against your siding and roof color.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, all three colors looked great in different ways:

  • Coastal Blue felt fresh and unique
  • Black felt bold and classic
  • Winestone felt warm, timeless, and right for my home

I’m happy I trusted my instincts and went with Winestone. It gave the house the refresh it needed while still keeping the original charm I’ve always loved.
