This spring the lawn started getting a little messy. At first it just looked uneven, but after looking closer there are definitely several weeds starting to spread through the grass. The biggest thing showing up is a lighter green grassy weed with tiny white seed heads sticking up everywhere. From what I can tell, it looks like annual bluegrass (Poa annua), which is really common this time of year when the weather stays cool and wet.
There are also a few patches that look like clover starting to creep in, along with some small purple flowering weeds in a couple areas of the yard. The lawn itself is still mostly healthy, but the thinner spots are where the weeds seem to be taking over first. Once those areas open up, weeds move in fast.
The annual bluegrass is probably the most noticeable problem right now because it grows faster than the rest of the lawn and stands out with those little seed heads. Even after mowing, they seem to pop right back up. Some sections of the yard also have lighter patches where the grass never really thickened up after winter, which probably made it easier for weeds to spread.
To try and get things under control before summer, I’m planning to use Ortho Weed B Gon Lawn Weed Killer and see how it does. I’ve seen decent reviews on it for clover and other broadleaf weeds, so hopefully it helps clean things up without hurting the lawn too much. I’m going to spray the problem areas first and give it a couple weeks to see the results before deciding if the lawn needs anything more aggressive.
The plan is pretty simple: mow first, wait a day or two, spray when the weather is dry, and then leave it alone long enough for the weeds to absorb the treatment. After that I’ll probably overseed some of the thinner areas later in the season to help the grass fill back in.
If anyone wants to check out the product, this is the one I picked up:

Hopefully this knocks back most of the weeds and gets the lawn looking thicker again over the next month or so. I’ll probably post an update later once I see how well it actually works.
